The track quickly grew into the monster it is now. Needing more track, I found myself buying out Toys-R-Us and ChildWorld for track.
Emptied their shelves, and filled a shopping cart at both stores. My friends were instantly addicted the first time they raced on the first 4 lane course. It was unbelievable!
Popularity grew and word spread. Many of my friends were buying HO cars anywhere they could find them. At the time we built the track, Tyco was the hot car. We tried everything we
could to get the most out of these cars. All we had available for hop ups was silicone tires. Then we found Scale Auto and started building Tycos. Shortly after this, the Super G+
came in 1991, and we were thrilled at the new chassis design. We began our own sort of race programs, and HO slot racing was hot for many years. ----------------------------------------------------------
The Tuesday Night Club: During the few years when I worked nights, we had a group of members called the Tuesday Night Club. We got off work at 11:00 PM, and raced slots until 3 or 4 in the morning
every Tuesday Night. It was steady for more than a year. Guys would be arguing over who gets what lane to practice on and who was going to kick who's ass. Competition grew quickly. The racing really
caught on with more of my friends. I would get off work, and find two or three friends at a time waiting in the parking lot, showing me their new cars they bought. They were cleaning out every store in the
area that had HO slots. Married guys were getting in trouble for blowing off things just to race slot cars. People were coming home late. It was hilarious!! My neighbors were a couple of old
Hungarian folks, and were very patient with all off the noise and traffic at the house. On weekends, my 60 year old neighbor would bring over a six-pack and watch us race. Whenevr I did work on the trackside
features, I had to make sure that the actual track was never "down". Or I heard about it! LOL! My house practically had a revolving door on it. Guys would show up at any time to test out their
cars, and expect the track to be up and operational. Too funny... Friday Night HO Racing Our club is still racing HO slot cars after 10 years of operation. How many Slot Car Clubs can say
that? It has amazed me at the ongoing popularity of the hobby. Granted we have had our slow spells due to various reasons, but it always comes back. As of 2001, we have really gotten a terrific program
rolling, and members are more enthusiastic than ever! Multiple members are buying up $60-70 RTR cars, in the ongoing race to be THE FASTEST. With our completely rebuilt power system for the track, members
are able to modify their cars at a higher level, and are acheiving speeds and track records never before seen in the past ten years at Vargo Speedway. We race on Friday Nights now, on a by-weekly basis. You can
catch all of the race talk and announcements of our club at the Planet Of Speed Bench Racing Forums
. You can also WATCH US RACE!, at the Vargo Speedway Live Slot Cam! This is the newest inovation at Vargo Speedway, and we are proud to THE FIRST, LIVE SLOT RACING WEB CAM ON THE INTERNET!! Don't Miss It!
Over the Years- People have donated many cars and accessories to Vargo Speedway, and it has continued to grow over the years. THe actual car collection has grown to over 300 vehicles, and required
moving the "TIMEX TOWER" of HO Cars to another room in the house. There just wasn't enough room in the race room itself. (Some of these vintage HO Cars are going up for Auction at eBay recently! Check out our
USED CARS FOR SALE PAGE!)
It took many years of work to bring it to the realism state it is now, and it still is never finished. It's like therapy I say- I go in the race room, drink a few beers, and bury myself in
some project. It is very rewarding, and keeps me out of trouble. ;-) |
